Rotary Convention Moves From Honolulu to Dubai to Barcelona

Skift Take

Rotary’s three-city pivot highlights a shifting landscape for global events, where geopolitical instability and venue uncertainty are growing challenges.

Rotary International has relocated its 2027 global convention to Barcelona after two successive host cities fell through — one due to construction delays, the other to geopolitical instability.

The convention, which focuses on the organization’s service mission and is scheduled for June 26–30, 2027, was originally planned to be held in Honolulu.

The convention, scheduled for June 26–30, 2027, is centered on Rotary’s global service mission and was originally planned for Honolulu. Its 2025 convention in Calgary drew 16,000 from 140 countries.

Its 2027 plans collapsed after the Hawaii Convention Center pushed its $87 million renovation completion date to January 2028, eliminating the venue as an option.

Rotary selected Dubai as a replacement. But escalating tensions in the Middle East tied to the conflict involving Iran created enough uncertainty that Rotary chose to defer Dubai to a future year rather than risk another disruption.

Barcelona, which had already been selected to host the 2029 convention, stepped in on an accelerated timeline. The city last hosted Rotary’s global convention in 2002.

“We are deeply grateful to the Barcelona organizers and the local Rotary members for their flexibility in working with us on an accelerated timeline,” said Rotary International President Francesco Arezzo.

“With enthusiasm and energy, we are prepared to pivot quickly to host the international convention in 2027,” said Sergio Aragón, chair of the Barcelona Host Committee and a member of the Rotary Club Barcelona Diagonal.

Global Events Face Rising Uncertainty

The double relocation highlights a growing challenge for global event organizers: long-term planning cycles are increasingly colliding with unpredictable variables, from infrastructure delays to geopolitical instability.

Ripple effects are impacting the region’s event industry. As of April 7, 269 events across the Gulf have been rescheduled since the Iran war began on February 28, with the UAE absorbing the heaviest blow: 17 canceled, and 50 postponed, according to Northbourne Advisory.

Among the international association meetings affected are the now-canceled 2026 UITP Summit, originally scheduled for April in Dubai, and the 2027 World Congress of Nephrology, which was also slated for Dubai but no longer lists a location on its website.

Rotary’s relationship with Honolulu is a bumpy one. The 2020 convention was planned for the Hawaiian city, but was canceled due to the Covid pandemic.

Rotary’s experience reflects a broader recalibration across the meetings industry. Planners are increasingly building multi-layer contingency plans and negotiating force majeure clauses with more specificity. In addition, backup destinations are no longer optional; they’re becoming standard.

Rotary's next gathering, the 2026 convention, is set for Taipei, where organizers anticipate more than 30,000 participants across multiple venues, including the Taipei Dome and Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center. Meanwhile, Dubai remains in consideration for a future convention, contingent on regional stability.
