SXSW 2026 Under Pressure to Deliver

Skift Take

SXSW’s 2026 edition will offer a preview of how large citywide events adapt when venues shutter, schedules compress, and worrying attendance trends reshape the bottom line.

Since 1987, South by Southwest (SXSW) has drawn thousands to Austin to a festival focused on the convergence of tech, music, film, and media. This year, a convention center closure and format shift mark one of the most significant transitions in the festival’s nearly 40-year history.

In addition, security will be heightened following a March 1 shooting in Austin’s Sixth Street entertainment district that left four people, including the shooter, dead and 15 injured.

Austin police say SXSW’s existing safety plans already accounted for mass-violence scenarios, but there will be a visible increase in police presence around the festival footprint, particularly near nightlife areas.

Compressed Agenda and No Convention Center

For the first time, its core tracks will run simultaneously, compressing the event into a single week, March 12–18. Organizers say the change reflects evolving attendee behavior. This year’s theme, “All Together Now,” is also meant to reflect that.

Even with the shortened schedule, SXSW remains massive. The 2026 edition includes more than 850 conference sessions, 600 networking events, and 450 brand activations. Featured speakers this year include Andy Cohen, Demi Moore, Gavin Newsom, Jane Fonda, and Serena Williams, who mostly join onstage as podcast guests.

This year, SXSW will be without its core venue, the Austin Convention Center. As a result, programming has been completely dispersed across downtown Austin’s hotels, theaters, and venues. Three central hubs across downtown Austin are designed to keep the event walkable and interconnected.

The city and SXSW organizer have long been preparing for the temporary loss of its biggest venue, which closed for a $1.6 billion redevelopment project expected to last until 2029.

Visit Austin president and CEO Tom Noonan said SXSW will return to the convention center when it opens. “SXSW was the last group in the old convention center and will be the first one in the new center in 2029.”

Declining Attendance Sends Worrying Signals

The structural changes come as the festival grapples with a decline in attendance. In 2024, SXSW reported 47,661 attendees at the in-person SXSW Conference, which dropped to 37,770 in 2025. SXSW Creative Industry Expo attendance also dropped from 51,090 in 2024 to 37,734 last year. Its music and film festivals also show similar drops.

According to The New York Times, the festival has also struggled to meet financial benchmarks in recent years.

In April 2025, majority owner Penske Media Corporation restructured the organization, resulting in the departure of longtime president Hugh Forrest and several other executives.

Despite the changes, SXSW remains a major economic engine for Austin. The most recent economic impact report, released in 2024, estimated the event generated $377.3 million for the local economy.

Global Expansion — and Retrenchment

SXSW has looked to expand internationally with mixed success.

SXSW Sydney ran for three editions, drawing a total of more than 345,000 attendees and generating $276 million in economic impact.

However, in January, the event was cancelled when the New South Wales government withdrew funding following a review of major events spending.Meanwhile, SXSW London debuted in June of 2025 — with London signing a reported 10-year contract with the city — signaling the brand’s continued international ambitions.
