An Effective Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Template

  • Well, it so happens that while I was looking at tools to plan the work breakdown structure of my next project, I bumped into a great template by David Seah, the Task Order Up template.

    The Work Breakdown Structure Explained

    As he explains:

One of the original inspirations is my belief that, in a trusting work environment, all an employee needs to know are the following two things:

    • What I am supposed to do?
    • When is it due?

The manager / producer needs to know:

    • What the employee is doing?
    • How long did it take to finish?
    • Is the employee being effectively utilized?

That sums it all up for me. When you are planning complex projects, this template comes handy to break down the tasks into organized processes.

What I particularly liked is the fact it is printed. I feel that we need to step back a little from the over-tech solutions to a more hands on planning. Writing down helps a lot when brainstorming.

The website is featuring the 2010 edition, but Seah updates it regularly every new year.
